He handled the case himself for more than a year before Indianapolis attorney Kathleen DeLaney took over. ‘The whole case came down to whether or not Jeanette Stephens freely and voluntarily consented to these officers entering her home and searching without a warrant,’ DeLaney said after Wednesday’s verdict. ‘The jury determined that Mrs. Stephens’ civil rights were violated in her own home.’”

Mrs. DeLaney was named by 515 persons out of 2,075 who sent in nominations for the honor.
